Changes I Would Like to See
- Smoother player movement
- Animated terrain overlays for walking in water, tall grass, etc.
- Replace gory images such as blood on walls and floor with something like bones when "blood" is turned off in client.
- A type of collision through which launching ranged attack is possible (e.g. firing arrows over a table or through a fence).
- Optional audio alert for private messages
- Sprite that displays user's current weapon or weapon class during combat
Recommendations
Software to Use With Stendhal
- AntiMicro
- Because of its text-based player-npc interaction and mouse-click battle systems Stendhal isn't really designed to be played using a gamepad or joystick. However, I myself still enjoy using a gamepad for walking and exploring. AntiMicro is the best utility I have found for mapping keyboard input to a gamepad or joystick.
- Another great feature that can be useful in Stendhal is its ability to define macros. For example, a button can be set up to execute a command to say "Hi". Just add a key combination like the following: "H" + "I" + "Enter".
- Cross-platform and open-source. I have tested it on these systems: Windows Vista and 7 (32/64 bit), Debian Linux 8, and FreeBSD 10.
- Captura (discontinued)
- An excellent screen capturing tool. Unfortunately, not cross-platform. It supports encoding with FFmpeg & some other tools (which I haven't used yet).
- Windows only and open-source.
- HexChat
- My favorite IRC client for chatting on the Arianne libera.chat channels: #arianne and #arianne-chat
- Cross-platform and open source.
- QuiteRSS
- An excellent desktop RSS/Atom feed reader. Use it to keep track of offers made with Harold.
- Cross-platform and open-source.
Tools for Development
Graphics
- GIMP
- The most popular free & open source photo & graphics editor.
- Inkscape
- Editor for Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG).
- KRITA
- Just discovered this one. Don't know much about it yet, other than it is creating graphics.
